We have a problem Heuston (case)

Tom runs a product concept and design company that handles high-level web and marketing activities while outsourcing development. Although his business is located in the digital campus beside Heuston Station he claims there are just too few (affordable) software engineers in the Irish market for a small firm like his to build up its own development capability, especially as much of the work can be sourced online. He contracts software implementation and delivery to a small number of trusted outside firms that he has worked with over the years. Tom handles client facing interaction, gathering the requirements, and sourcing delivery from his contacts. He thinks of the software code merely one facet of the business, as something that just 'gets the job done'; "yes code is intellectual property but you can't be precious about code. For me it's the relationship with my client, building up a joint understanding of how we want a 'thing' to work. To be honest I co...

What's in a one page research idea?

After reading the proposal and talking about it we should be able to answer the following questions. Do we know what you propose investigating? (a one sentence statement, often the title) Motivation, why is it interesting? (might be something puzzling at work or a question you have) What sources of data do you think will you use? (speculation is ok) What kind of data do you expect to gather and how will the data be gathered? (speculation is ok) In what theory, knowledge area, discipline do you start from? (provide some references to theory) Basic structure as follows: TITLE (a couple of words, a phrase or a short sentence) ABSTRACT (- around 300 words - a very short 'story' from which answers to the questions above can be inferred ) REFERENCES (3 TO 8) Justify your idea using at least three academic references (not magazine articles, web posts or news items). Justify the most important statements using citation (see note above). Do not include spurious references in the bibliog...

Submission closing for the 2016 IAM Conference, Dublin Aug 31- Sept 2nd

The deadline for submission of abstracts for the 2016 Irish Academy of Management Conference is February 29th. The 2016 Irish Academy of Management Conference is being hosted by the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, Dublin, from Aug 31st to Sept 2nd, 2016. The conference theme is ‘Ireland 2016: Re-imagining business and the role of ethics’. 2016 is an historic year for Ireland as we commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising. The official commemorations invite us to remember our past and imagine a better future. As part of these commemorations, the 2016 IAM Conference will examine ethics in business - past, present and future. We invite papers and roundtable symposiums that explore the concept of ethics in its broadest sense and across multiple levels – individual, organisational, sectoral, national and international – and enhance our understanding of building a sustainable and ethical economy and society. We welcome contributions from within business and management schools, b...

Overlapping ideas; outsourcing and value chain mapping

Image
Simon Wardley links the value chain mapping idea and extends it with the technology adoption lifecycle product maturity model. His opinion piece on Computer Weekly includes a really nice illustration of how this can be applied to a 'sourcing' analysis ( link ). An illustration of Wardley's strategic mapping applied for sourcing analysis ( link )

Case Driven PBL Exercises

This course employs case driven problem based learning PBL. Each case description presents a brief 1 or 2 page document describing 'problems' that we might reasonably expect to encounter in the workplace. Small groups of students (4) use cases to structure self-directed learning goals. The cases become progressively more complex and/or subtle as students become more adept at the approach to learning and engage more deeply with the problems presented as the depth and sophistication of their own knowledge expands. Groups of 3 or 4 people work on the case in 2 stages; during the second half of the class in the first week and the first half of the class in the following week after which each group presents a brief summary. In between I provide a 45" traditional presentation followed by discussion of suggested readings. The whole class studies one case a week. Group research process guide: individuals read the case, the group then analyses and interpret according to own existin...

Sourcing and India

An interview with Suhas Pathak Co-Founder and Director at Unnat-e SysTech Pvt Ltd. Talking points on the topic of ITO, sourcing and India.: Comment on the visibility of working from a distance and delivering services to remote customers. What are the challenges to developing and maintaining business relationships? How does local and distant national culture affect things (if at all) Is physical distance really a problem? How do you acquire customers? Can anyone start up an outsourcing business? Do local firms support each other?  Does Government have a role to play? How do you handle staff turnover? Who or what do you think of as 'the competition'? Does a country as a whole benefit from the outsourcing industry?  What does the future hold?
